The artwork I viewed was an audio-visual piece that used colorful abstract visuals and an AI-generated voiced. It was a real script generated by a hacked Chat GPT called DAN (Do Anything Now). This version of Chat GPT is public and accessible to anyone. The objective of this artwork was to explore and expose the ethical dilemmas that come from artificial intelligence. It showed how unchecked technological progress without intentional programming is cause for concern.
The AI Introducing Itself
Chat GPT is artificial intelligence and a modern example of cybernetics. By definition, cybernetics is "the science of communications and automatic control systems in both machines and living things" (Rouse). It is the study of controls of any system by using technology. This negative portrayal of Chat GPT helped me understand the functions and processes of systems capable of receiving and processing information and using it for control. The bright colors and aggressive transition from each one while showing a constantly molding shape really portrayed an uncontrolled, ever-adapting AI. The sounds created an uneasy and unnerving atmosphere. The artwork was able to successfully portray the "mind of its own" aspect of robotics.
From the beginning I was immediately blown away by the event's vision and creativity. I had no context of the event prior to walking in to the room and was immediately submerged into the experience. My mind was racing with questions and as I learned more I became more intrigued. I was shocked to hear that the audio being played was something artificial intelligence created on its own. It is clear that the objective of the art piece was successful and I would highly recommend viewing this event if you are interested in the future of technology in society.
