The artwork I viewed was an audio-visual piece that used colorful abstract visuals and an AI-generated voiced. It was a real script generated by a hacked Chat GPT called DAN (Do Anything Now). This version of Chat GPT is public and accessible to anyone. The objective of this artwork was to explore and expose the ethical dilemmas that come from artificial intelligence.  It showed how unchecked technological progress without intentional programming is cause for concern. The AI Introducing Itself Chat GPT is artificial intelligence and a modern example of cybernetics. By definition, cybernetics is "the science of communications and automatic control systems in both machines and living things" (Rouse). It is the study of controls of any system by using technology. This negative portrayal of Chat GPT helped me understand the functions and processes of systems capable of receiving and  processing information and using it for control. The bright colors and ag...

Medicine + Technology + Art

Image
My dad is a radiologist. He also happens to be a naturally good artist. I think my dad represents what Silvia Casini says in her article  Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) as Mirror and Portrait: MRI Configurations Between Science and the Arts.  MRI technology is a bridge between science and the arts. It requires an artistic eye and skillful interpretation. My dad doesn't paint as a hobby or spend any free time doing anything remotely related to art, but he's able to sketch a pretty accurate depiction of something if he needs to. Whenever he needs to explain something related to anatomy when he talking to someone unfamiliar to medicine, along with "dumbing down" his medical terminology, he sketches a diagram. Regardless of what area of the body it is, he will be able to sketch an accurate portrayal of that part. He has seen so many x-rays, MRI, and CT scans while working, mentally picturing the human anatomy comes easily to him.  Sketch of Human Arm When he draws these...

Robotics + Art

Cover of Walter Benjamin's "The Work of Art in the Age of Mechanical Reproduction" In "The Work of Art in the Age of Mechanical Reproduction", Walter Benjamin explores the effects advances in technology has had on the production of art in modern day times. According to Professor Vesna, this essay has been "influential across the humanities, and especially in the fields of cultural studies, media theory, architectural theory and art history." He discusses the way art has been received since the technological progression. Much of his writing refers to mechanization. Mechanization is the process of either replacing human labor with machinery or making something mechanical in nature. It has been a major factor in industrialization.                                                                 ...

Math and Art

Image
Mathematics has been very influential in the progression of both art and science throughout history. The concept of using mathematics in art is nothing new. Math has always seemed to play a role in art, either consciously or subconsciously. It has given artists inspiration to create new art using a different perspective.  For example, Linda Henderson explains that non-Euclidean geometry in modern art was very different from the Euclidean geometry that was dominant in mathematics for centuries. Non-Euclidean geometry suggested that space could be distorted in ways that were previously unimaginable. This expands on the idea of the fourth dimension. The fourth dimension suggests a new experience that is more advanced than the three-dimensional space. While a three dimensional space encompasses length, area, and volume, the fourth dimension also includes time. Umberto Boccioni created a sculpture called Unique Forms of Continuity in Space , which portrays a human figure with elongated ...

Two Cultures

Image
After reading these articles, I realized my brother is a perfect example of the two cultures of sciences and the humanities. I have been able to witness the way the two cultures have played a friendly game of tug-of-war with him over the years. As STEM majors in college and current doctors, my parents' influence of science and technology is evident. My brother is about to graduate college with a computer science degree. This gave him the opportunity to do an internship over the summer with Amazon. Yet my brother is an artistic and creative person at heart. He used to draw as a child and has always loved music. His love for music grew as he got older and led him to play multiple instruments.  Stereotypical Differences Between Science and Art Despite the contrast of these two cultures, my brother has found his own third culture. As Victoria Vesna explains in "Toward A Third Culture: Being In Between," a third culture can create an inclusive approach to problem solving. She ...
